MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE USING AYURVEDIC TREATMENT PROTOCOL
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a multifaceted progressive deterioration of renal function. Its furtherance is often undetected and paves way to a pervasive and insidious health crisis. Methodology: A review of published cases was planned to explore the efficacy of Ayurvedic management in improving renal function and other symptomatic parameters in CKD. A comprehensive literature search of case studies in Google Scholar and PubMed spanning five years was conducted. The studies that fulfilled the inclusive criteria were included in the review. Based on this conclusion, an in-depth interview of five experts treating CKD from Malappuram, Kerala was done. The interpretations of both the review of published case reports on ayurvedic management of CKD and in-depth interview were statistically represented. Result: Out of 22 identified case reports, 14 met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The mean age of the subjects was 51.58 years, with 71.4% males and 26.8% females. Following Ayurvedic treatment, notable improvements were observed in serum creatinine, serum urea and e-GFR. Conclusion: This case based review suggests that Ayurvedic treatment can contribute to improving the quality of life of CKD affected patients. However, inconsistencies in methodology and lack of standardized diagnostic criteria underscore the need for large-scale, high quality clinical trials to confirm these findings and establish the efficacy and safety of Ayurvedic formulations in CKD management.
EFFECTIVENESS OF BAKUCHI (PSORALEA CORYLIFOLIA LINN.) AS RASAYANA THERAPY IN PSORIASIS - A CASE REPORT
Psoriasis is a chronic and debilitating disease with a considerable global impact, characterized by increased rates of relapse and remission, significantly affecting the psychosomatic well-being of patients. It is a disease which can produce adverse effects on different tissues including joints and which is also characterised by recurrence after treatment cessation. This is the case study of a 61-year-old male who was a chronic smoker presenting with complaints of itchy, scaly lesions all over the body, especially over face, ears, head, back, bilateral lower limbs and upper limbs for the past 12 years which had aggravated over the last 2 months and consulted OPD of Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal. The treatment approach adopted in this case of plaque psoriasis was sodhana (biopurification) therapy followed by rasayana (rejuvenation) therapy. The combination of Bakuchi rasayana used here contains only minimal ingredients, yet it is an effective regimen. Also, it has additional benefits like easiness of preparation and palatability. After the full course of treatment there was an overall improvement in symptoms, notable among them were a decrease in PASI score from 14.5 to 4.8, and a significant enhancement in the patient's quality of life. Following the rasayana therapy, the patient was able to pass bowel without straining. Thus, the combination of sodhana therapies followed by the administration of Bakuchi rasayana played a significant role in the marked improvement of lesions in plaque psoriasis.
EFFECT OF ABHRA NISHADI CHURNA AS ADD -ON MEDICATION ON POST PRANDIAL BLOODSUGAR IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS : A CASE REPORT
Ayurveda provides detailed knowledge of causative factors and pathogenesis of diseases, along with time tested treatments based on its principles. We report a 10 year chronic case of diabetes mellitus (68-year-old female patient), currently on conventional medicine, having a short time elevation of blood glucose level. A one- month long Ayurveda treatment, along with the present conventional medicine, has shown notable efficacy in managing the hyperglycemia.
